The ladies at I Heart Faces are offering a little constructive feedback today, and while I am nowhere near a professional photographer, or maybe because I am nowhere near a professional photographer, I would love a little feedback.The first photo is the original (f2.8, 1/45sec, ISO 80, 6.3mm). I think his face looks blown out on one side and too dark on the other. The second is the edited photo, which I edited with paint.net. I bumped up the saturation a little, added a little more contrast and sharpened. Honestly, I just play around with my photos until I like what I see.

Well I'm sorry I'm not one of the ladies from I Heart Faces, lol, but you get one of the dudes from I Heart Faces (next best thing).
I think you did a decent job on the photo. It's tough when you get part of the face blown out and the other side dark. Now just remember that in some type of portraits it's popular to have one side darker, so it's not a big deal if that happens.
One thing you could do that would help is to get a reflector to bounce the light back to the right side of his face.
Well I tried to play around with the image, I went to lighten the image up. Then i went ahead to sharpen, dodge and burn his eyes. Next, I lightly cleaned up some of the rash on his eyes with the blur button. I then ran unsharp mask with the settings 150-1-10. One thing in the future you might want to think about as well shooting young children is to go with a shutter speed of 1/125 minimum. In order to get that to work on this exposure you would then bump up your ISO to accomodate that shutter speed.

I'm not much help on the technical aspects of the photo. I know you were concerned about the lighting, but I think a little side lighting can give a face character. What distracted me a bit from the photo was that the backdrop was a bit wrinkly. I tried an edit where I smoothed out the backdrop. The nice thing is that this photo is sharp and detailed. You captured such an adorable expression!
I'm a terrible photographer (just visit my blog...my pictures are all taken with a mid level point and shoot digital) but I think you are very brave to put your work out there!
